Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are best suited to families with a variety of members. They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and can even bite. In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who are fond of playing, climbing and interact. Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this, DNA testing is the only way to determine the sex. Once the sex of the birds is known the breeding process can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. This can be a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and realize that this is a tough task. The use of positive reinforcement can speed up the process and help correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative, on a plan that would eventually take her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where to buy macaws she could spend the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the actual ocean, not a concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals that bond with their family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

To achieve that goal she developed her own teacher training program that is the most extensive currently available. The program is dubbed Lolita's Legacy(tm). The first step is System I. Then System II builds on the repertoire introduced in System I, Severe Macaw Price with exercises using the equipment. It also introduces teachers to the exercises using the Spine Corrector, Magic Circle, Foam Rollers and Bars. This module comes with the manual as well as DVD of Lolita teaching the system for personal practice.

Lolita's Diet

A healthy diet is important for the health of a gold and blue macaw. They require premium food items, and lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates about Lolita's health and status but there are still questions. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring and squid per day.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been criticised for the quality of the food they provide to killer whales. The 57-year old orca was taken from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is threatened, she lives in a tank which some believe is too small.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and would like to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for a long time. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a fragile state.

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.

Since her captor doesn't have to disclose the information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the death of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a seaside sanctuary where to buy macaw she can swim deep in the water and perhaps be being reunited with her mother orca.
