Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can easily become bored and discover ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not involved enough with them. If they are not socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw representative species does not feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds that are fond of playing, climbing and play. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great macau pet shop, they are also great companions for children.

Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live near. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud cries which can be annoying to those who live in apartments or condos.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Due to this the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex has been determined pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is a long process and the pet's owner must be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help accelerate the process and help correct any behavior issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the ocean.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale that passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
