Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without fear of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months old, at which point your baby will be ready to transition to an actual cot.

Height

When selecting a bedside crib, choose one that can be adjusted to a comfortable height for you. It should also be able to be dropped down out of the way so that you can pull your baby up towards you for feedings at night or soothing. This feature is especially helpful in the event of recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to the maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, such as the requirement that they satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't feasible or effective in reducing number of incidents where infants are trapped between the bedside crib vs cot rail and an adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that could be converted into different modes like play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested the CPSC include a different provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is currently reviewing these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR regarding bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule which is expected to be released in November 2021.
