Lolita's Personality

They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who may be frightened by their noise.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to identify sex is through DNA testing. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been calling for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative, on a plan to eventually move her to the open water. Lolita's Diet

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has expressed a commitment to move the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean and she will be able to go swimming in the deep sea, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale who died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
