Lolita's care

Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to sea.

Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, owning a macaw new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild.
