This film has received great praise from critics and is considered one of the most acclaimed documentaries ever made. It has also won numerous awards including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in the year 2019.

In addition to his work with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also set the standard for new avenues in bird intelligence. Alex was able to perform more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions and could count objects up to six, and demonstrate math skills that were advanced for an avian at the time.

He also was able to communicate with other animals using sign language, and was able to comprehend grammar. He utilized a method of teaching called "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they were trying to teach it. The trainers would often switch positions so that the bird could interact with both trainers and receive the attention of each.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able to achieve many things throughout his life due to his strength of character and the desire to live life on his own terms.
